Every wet wipe needs a preservative. A pack of water-based wipes that you open fifty times over a month will grow mold and bacteria without one, and that is the real risk to your cat — not the preservative.

The easy marketing move is a botanical "natural preservative system." We looked hard at that route and passed on it. Plant-derived preservatives and botanical fragrance actives are among the most common causes of contact allergy in topical products, which is why the fragrance industry runs dedicated repeat-insult patch testing programs on them.

Natural and non-irritating are not the same word. Several brands in this category found that out the expensive way, on customers' cats.

So we use benzalkonium chloride at 0.08%. That sits inside the 0.1% limit the Cosmetic Ingredient Review considers safe for personal-care products, and inside the standard range used across the wet-wipe industry. Then we did the part most brands skip: we paid SGS to test the finished formula, not the individual ingredients — the same acute oral toxicity study covered next. It is in there to keep the wipes fresh in the pack, and nothing else. These are grooming wipes, not a sanitizer, and we make no germ-killing claims for your pet.

We would rather publish a small amount of a well-studied preservative with a test behind it than a longer, prettier list with nothing behind it.

Every grooming wipe ends up in your cat's mouth. Not maybe — always. Cats groom off anything you apply within minutes of you applying it.

So in early 2024 we sent our formula to SGS Shanghai for acute oral toxicity testing under OECD 420, the international standard method. Not an ingredient review, not a supplier's assurance — a study on the actual liquid squeezed from a production pack.

The result: no toxic effects and no mortality at the 2.0 g/kg limit dose, with normal weight gain and clean pathology across the full 14-day observation period. The formula classified as GHS Category 5 / Unclassified — the lowest hazard band on the scale.

Being straight about scope: that's an ingestion study, not a skin study, and we don't dress it up as one.

Cats are not small dogs. Their livers lack much of the glucuronidation capacity that dogs and humans rely on to clear the aromatic compounds in essential oils, which is why so many oils that are unremarkable for a dog are a genuine problem for a cat.

Our dog wipes contain a trace of real lavender oil. This formula contains none. No lavender, no tea tree, no citrus, no "natural fragrance" doing the same job under a different name. We built a separate formula rather than sell you the dog version with a cat on the label.

Five ingredients. Water, one mild cleanser, catnip, green tea, and a named preservative at a published percentage. That is the entire list.

There's actual Nepeta cataria extract in these wipes, not a catnip-scented fragrance. For most cats it turns a wipe-down from a wrestling match into something they lean into.

Here's the part most brands leave out: somewhere between 30 and 50 percent of cats don't respond to catnip at all. The response is genetic — they either have it or they don't — and kittens generally don't develop it until three to six months old.

So if your cat shrugs at these, nothing is wrong with the wipes or your cat. You've got one of the non-responders, and the wipe still cleans exactly as well. Our refund policy covers it either way.
