Why we chose this preservative — and why we tell you the number

Every wet wipe needs a preservative. A pack of water-based wipes that you open fifty times over a month will grow mold and bacteria without one, and that is the real risk to your dog — not the preservative.
The easy marketing move is a botanical "natural preservative system." We looked hard at that route and passed on it. Plant-derived preservatives and botanical fragrance actives are among the most common causes of contact allergy in topical products, which is why the fragrance industry runs dedicated repeat-insult patch testing programs on them.
Natural and non-irritating are not the same word. Several brands in this category found that out the expensive way, on customers' dogs.
So we use benzalkonium chloride at 0.08%. That sits inside the 0.1% limit the Cosmetic Ingredient Review considers safe for personal-care products, and inside the standard range used across the wet-wipe industry. Then we did the part most brands skip: we paid SGS to test the finished formula, not the individual ingredients — the same acute oral toxicity study covered next. It is in there to keep the wipes fresh in the pack, and nothing else. These are grooming wipes, not a sanitizer, and we make no germ-killing claims for your pet.
We would rather publish a small amount of a well-studied preservative with a test behind it than a longer, prettier list with nothing behind it.
Wipe a dog's paws after a walk and the next ten minutes are predictable: he lies down and works on them. That's not a misuse case we're covering for — it's the normal sequence, and it's why "safe on skin" was never going to be where we stopped.
In early 2024 we sent the finished formula to SGS Shanghai for acute oral toxicity testing under OECD 420, the international standard method. This is the same formula and the same report we use for our cat wipes — we didn't run a milder study for the more sensitive species and call the dog version close enough. If it clears the bar for a cat's liver, it clears it for a dog's.

Questions people actually ask
Can I use these on a puppy?
Yes. The formula is neutral pH with no dyes or synthetic fragrance. As with anything new, wipe a small patch first and wait a day. If your puppy is under eight weeks or has any skin condition, ask your vet first.
Do these replace a bath?
For daily dirt, pollen, and mud, mostly yes — that's what they're for. For a genuinely filthy dog, or a medicated shampoo your vet prescribed, no. These are maintenance between baths, not a substitute for one.
Is it safe if my dog licks his paws afterward?
We had it tested. Independent acute oral toxicity testing at SGS Shanghai, run to the OECD 420 standard method, returned no toxic effects at the 2.0 g/kg limit dose and a GHS Category 5 / Unclassified rating — the lowest hazard band on the scale. Why is there a synthetic preservative in a plant-based product?
Because the alternative is worse. See "Why we chose this preservative" above — we explain the trade-off and publish the exact percentage.
Can I use the dog wipes on my cat?
No. These contain a trace of lavender oil. Dogs metabolise it normally; cats lack the liver enzyme to clear essential oils efficiently. Our cat wipes are formulated with no essential oils at all — use those.
Can I use them inside the ears?
No. The ear canal needs an acidic formula, and these are neutral pH 7.0. Our ear canal wipes are pH 3.0 and made for that job.
Do these kill bacteria?
No, and we won't claim they do. They physically remove dirt, dander, and pollen. If your dog has a skin or ear infection, that's a vet visit, not a wipe.
My dog reacted. What now?
Stop using them and email us within 30 days. Full refund, nothing to ship back, and you keep the pack. If the skin is broken or the reaction doesn't settle, see your vet.
Are they flushable?
No. Bin them. Nothing that holds together well enough to clean a shepherd's coat belongs in a sewer line.

Because it's the study we ran, and hiding that would be worse than explaining it. The two formulas share a base and a preservative level; the cat version is the harder ingestion case because cats groom more and clear fewer compounds.
